AS/NZS 3760:2003

In-service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment

This standard specifies procedures for the safety inspection and testing of low voltage single phase and poly-phase (e.g. nominal 240V and 415V) electrical equipment, connected to the power supply by a flexible lead and/or connecting device.

In-service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment is necessary for the safety of persons using the equipment and for the discharge of the obligations of the employer and employees as stated in relevant  legislation covering occupational health and safety issues.

The purpose of the inspection and testing of electrical is identify equipment that may cause an electrical hazard to the user or other persons and also to identify any adverse conditions or environment that could potentially make the electrical equipment unsafe.

The Standard refers to electrical equipment that is connected to a power supply by a flexible cord and/or connecting device. This can include such items as

(a)             Power tools

(b)             Plug-in Air- Conditioners

(c)             Toasters and Kettles

(d)             Microwave Ovens

(e)             Vacuum Cleaners

(f)              Computers

(g)             EPODs 

(h)             Extension Leads

The Standard states that the inspection & testing procedures shall be carried out by a “Competent Person” as defined in Clause 1.4.5. AS/NZS 3760:2003 (see Training Providers)
